A Certified Reference Material (CRM) is a homogeneous, well-characterized material — typically a natural ore, mineral concentrate, soil, or synthetic preparation — whose chemical composition has been certified by a recognized standards body or laboratory through rigorous inter-laboratory testing and statistical validation. CRMs are fundamental tools in quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) programs across bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond mining operations, where accurate and precise chemical analysis underpins resource estimation, grade control, process optimization, and commercial settlement. In gold mining, CRMs with certified gold concentrations at multiple grade levels (low, medium, high) are routinely inserted into sample batches submitted to assay laboratories to monitor laboratory accuracy, identify systematic bias, and detect contamination or sample mix-ups. In bauxite mining, CRMs are used to validate analytical results for alumina (Al₂O₃), silica (SiO₂), iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), and other key quality parameters. In iron ore operations, CRMs certify grades of iron (Fe), phosphorus (P), silica, and alumina. CRMs should be traceable to international standards such as those issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CANMET, or GEOSTATS, and must be used in conjunction with blanks (for contamination monitoring) and field duplicates (for precision assessment) to constitute a complete QAQC program compliant with JORC, NI 43-101, or SAMREC reporting codes.
