Chain Conveyor

A Chain Conveyor is a bulk material handling system in which one or more continuous chains — fitted with flight bars, buckets, or a solid pan — are driven by sprockets to transport granular, lumpy, or slurry-like materials along a defined path. Unlike belt conveyors, chain conveyors are particularly suited to handling hot, abrasive, chemically aggressive, or cohesive materials that would damage rubber belts, making them valuable in mineral processing and mining operations across bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond sectors. In alumina refineries, chain conveyors — particularly en-masse or drag chain conveyors — are used to transport calcined alumina (Al₂O₃) from rotary kilns or fluid bed calciners at elevated temperatures (up to 1000°C or higher) to storage silos, where the enclosed design prevents dust emission and heat loss. In iron ore sintering and pelletizing plants, chain conveyors handle hot sinter or pellets from the strand discharge. In gold processing operations, chain conveyors are used in ore receiving and crushing circuits to handle coarse ore, particularly where belt conveyors would suffer excessive wear. Diamond mining operations also employ chain conveyors in kimberlite or alluvial ore handling prior to crushing and scrubbing. Key maintenance priorities for chain conveyors include chain elongation monitoring, sprocket wear inspection, lubrication of chain joints, and tension management to prevent excessive sag or chain jamming, which can cause costly plant stoppages.
