Chute System

A chute system is a gravity-fed material-handling structure used in mining operations to transfer bulk materials — including ore, waste rock, concentrate, or gangue — from a higher elevation to a lower one with controlled flow. In bauxite mining, chute systems are integral to crushing and conveying circuits, directing mined bauxite from primary crushers to secondary processing stages or stockpiles. In gold mining operations, chutes are used in milling circuits to feed ore into ball mills, SAG mills, and leach tanks, as well as in underground stopes to channel broken ore to drawpoints and ore passes. In iron ore mining, chute systems are heavily engineered to handle the high tonnage, abrasive nature of the ore, and often incorporate wear-resistant liners made of chromium carbide, ceramic, or polyurethane. In diamond mining, chute systems must be carefully designed to prevent diamond breakage, as high-value stones can be damaged by excessive drop heights or impact forces. Key design parameters include chute angle, material velocity, impact forces, wear rate, and dust suppression. Chute systems are typically engineered using discrete element modelling (DEM) software to optimize flow and minimize maintenance downtime.
