A confined space in mining is defined as an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is not designed for continuous human occupancy, has restricted means of entry or exit, and may present serious risks to workers due to hazardous atmospheres, engulfment, entrapment, or other physical dangers. In mining environments covering bauxite refineries, gold processing plants, iron ore handling facilities, and diamond recovery circuits, confined spaces include tanks, silos, hoppers, settling ponds, mill liners, underground drives, sumps, cyclone units, pressure vessels, and conveyor tunnels. Entry into confined spaces requires a formal permit-to-work system, atmospheric testing for oxygen deficiency, toxic gases (such as hydrogen sulphide or carbon monoxide), and flammable vapours, as well as isolation of all energy sources (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic). A trained standby person must remain outside the space during entry, and rescue equipment must be available and ready. Confined space incidents are among the most fatal in the mining industry, as rescuers themselves can become casualties if proper procedures are not followed. Regular training, equipment inspection, and compliance with national safety regulations are mandatory to manage confined space risks effectively.
