Controlled Blasting

Controlled blasting is a specialised set of blasting techniques used in mining to manage and limit the adverse effects of explosives detonation on surrounding rock mass, infrastructure, neighbouring communities, and the environment, while still achieving the required fragmentation and production outcomes. In open pit mining of gold, iron ore, and bauxite, as well as in underground and alluvial diamond operations, controlled blasting methods are employed to minimise blast-induced vibration (ground vibration), air overpressure (airblast), flyrock, dust, and noise. Common controlled blasting techniques include pre-split blasting (where a row of closely spaced holes is fired along a designated excavation boundary before main production blasting to create a fracture plane that limits back-break), cushion blasting, trim blasting, and the use of electronic detonators to allow precise millisecond delay timing between individual holes. Electronic detonators provide significantly more accurate timing than traditional pyrotechnic detonators, enabling better fragmentation and reduced vibration through superposition minimisation. Controlled blasting is particularly important in urban or populated proximate mining areas, near sensitive structures such as processing plants, tailings dams, or heritage sites, and in open pits where wall stability is critical. Blast monitoring with seismographs and adherence to vibration limits defined in environmental permits are standard practice.
