Conveyor Idler

A conveyor idler is a rotating cylindrical roller mounted on a support frame (idler frame or idler set) beneath or beside a conveyor belt to support the weight of the belt and the material being transported, and to guide the belt along its intended path. Idlers are one of the most numerous components in a conveyor system and play a vital role in determining conveyor efficiency, belt life, and maintenance requirements across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations. There are several types of idlers used on a conveyor: troughing idlers (also called carrying idlers), which support the loaded upper strand of the belt in a trough shape to contain the material; return idlers, which support the unloaded lower strand of the belt as it travels back to the feed end; impact idlers, which are installed at loading points and equipped with rubber disc rings to absorb the kinetic energy of falling ore and protect the belt from impact damage; and training (or tracking) idlers, which automatically re-centre a drifting belt by pivoting in response to lateral belt movement. Idler rolls are typically manufactured from steel with sealed roller bearings and may be fitted with various seal types to resist dust and water ingress. Idler spacing, diameter, and shell thickness must be selected according to belt width, belt speed, and material load to avoid excessive belt sag and rolling resistance. Failed idlers — seized, spinning, or worn — are a fire risk and must be replaced promptly as part of a proactive maintenance programme.
