Conveyor System

A conveyor system in mining is an integrated mechanical assembly designed to transport bulk materials — such as bauxite ore, gold-bearing rock, iron ore, or diamond-bearing kimberlite — from one location to another within a mining operation, processing plant, or from the mine to a port or stockpile. Conveyor systems are among the most important and cost-effective methods of bulk material handling in large-scale mining, offering continuous operation, high throughput capacity, lower energy consumption per tonne compared to trucking, and reduced labour requirements. A complete conveyor system comprises several interconnected components: a conveyor belt (the carrying medium), a drive unit (comprising electric motors, gearboxes, and couplings), head and tail pulleys, bend pulleys, take-up systems (for maintaining belt tension), carrying idlers, return idlers, impact idlers, transfer chutes, feed hoppers, belt cleaners, skirtboards, structural steelwork, and safety devices such as pull-rope switches, belt misalignment switches, and speed monitors. In bauxite mining, conveyor systems may span several kilometres linking the mine pit to the processing refinery. In gold mining, conveyors transport ore from jaw crushers to mill circuits. In iron ore mining, overland conveyors are used to move hundreds of millions of tonnes per year from inland mines to coastal export terminals. In diamond mining, conveyors are specifically designed to handle fragile kimberlite ore without causing unnecessary diamond breakage.
