Crusher Feed Bin

A crusher feed bin is a storage hopper or surge bin positioned upstream of a crusher to regulate and buffer the flow of run-of-mine (ROM) ore or crushed material into the crusher. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, feed bins provide surge capacity that decouples the variable nature of ore delivery from the mine (via trucks or conveyors) from the consistent feed requirements of the crushing plant. This buffering function improves crusher utilization rates and reduces mechanical stress associated with intermittent or surging feed conditions. Feed bins are typically constructed from heavy-gauge steel with wear-resistant liners and are equipped with level sensors, vibrating aids, or air cannons to prevent material bridging or rat-holing, especially in sticky or clayey ores. The bin discharge is usually controlled by an apron feeder or a variable-speed belt feeder, allowing operators to precisely regulate the rate at which material enters the crusher. Proper feed bin management is essential for maximizing crushing plant availability and throughput consistency.
