Cybersecurity in mining refers to the comprehensive set of practices, technologies, policies, and frameworks implemented to protect mining operations' digital infrastructure, operational technology (OT) systems, information technology (IT) networks, and sensitive data from unauthorized access, cyberattacks, data breaches, and operational disruptions. Modern mining operations — in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond extraction — are increasingly reliant on interconnected digital systems including autonomous haulage systems, remote drilling and blasting platforms, SCADA and process control systems for crushing and processing plants, mine management software, and real-time production monitoring systems. This digital connectivity creates significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities, particularly at the IT-OT convergence boundary. Cyberattacks on mining infrastructure can result in production stoppages, equipment damage, safety incidents, financial losses, and theft of sensitive geological and commercial data. High-profile ransomware attacks on mining companies in recent years have demonstrated the real and growing threat to the sector. Effective mining cybersecurity programs encompass network segmentation, access controls, endpoint protection, incident response planning, employee security awareness training, and compliance with frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Cybersecurity governance is increasingly a board-level risk management priority for major mining companies.
