Decant Structure

A decant structure in mining is a constructed facility within or adjacent to a tailings storage facility (TSF), residue storage area, or mine water impoundment that is specifically designed to collect and channel accumulated surface water for controlled removal from the impoundment, facilitating water recovery and preventing uncontrolled overtopping. Decant structures are a critical component of tailings facility water management systems and typically consist of a vertical riser pipe or tower connected to a horizontal outlet conduit, sometimes referred to as a penstock or decant pipe, that passes through or under the tailings embankment to a downstream discharge or pump station. In bauxite residue storage facilities, decant structures must be engineered to withstand the highly corrosive alkaline environment created by the caustic process liquor and must maintain structural integrity under the weight of accumulated residue. Gold mine TSFs use decant structures designed and constructed in accordance with applicable dam safety regulations, with regular inspections to identify structural deterioration or blockage. Iron ore tailings facilities employ robust decant structures capable of handling large volumes of water during wet season periods when rainfall can significantly increase the volume of the decant pond. Diamond mine tailings facilities also utilize decant structures to maintain optimal water balance within the tailings impoundment and ensure that recovered water meets quality standards for reuse. Decant structure design and maintenance is governed by international engineering standards and dam safety legislation, given the consequences of decant structure failure on TSF stability.
