Decant Water

Decant water in mining refers to the supernatant water that separates from tailings, residue, or slurry materials deposited within a tailings storage facility (TSF), residue storage area, or mine pit, rising to the surface of the impoundment as the solid particles settle out under gravity. In bauxite and alumina operations, decant water from residue storage facilities is an alkaline liquor containing dissolved sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), aluminate, and other process chemicals that represent valuable recoverable reagents; this water is reclaimed through the decant system and returned to the refinery to recover caustic soda and reduce freshwater consumption. Gold mine decant water may contain residual cyanide, cyanide degradation products, heavy metals such as copper and zinc, and elevated dissolved solids from the processing reagents used in the carbon-in-leach or heap leach recovery circuits, requiring careful management and treatment to meet environmental discharge standards. Iron ore tailings decant water typically contains elevated concentrations of suspended iron ore fines, dissolved iron, silica, and flotation reagents used in the beneficiation process, all of which must be managed in accordance with the mine's water use license conditions. In diamond mining, decant water from kimberlite tailings ponds may contain elevated levels of total dissolved solids and trace minerals leached from the kimberlite material. The quality, volume, and management of decant water are central issues in tailings facility operation and are subject to strict environmental regulation in most mining jurisdictions worldwide.
