A Deep Cone Thickener (DCT) is a specialized type of gravity sedimentation equipment used extensively in the mineral processing operations of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining. Unlike conventional thickeners, the deep cone thickener features a steep-sided, conical-shaped tank with a narrow base that promotes the development of a deep, high-density underflow paste. The steep cone angle — typically between 30° and 60° — facilitates the densification of settled solids through a combination of gravitational forces and raking mechanisms, producing underflow slurries with significantly higher solids concentrations than standard thickeners. In bauxite mining, deep cone thickeners are used in the Bayer Process to thicken red mud residue prior to disposal or storage. In iron ore beneficiation, DCTs produce high-density magnetite or hematite underflows that minimize water consumption. In diamond recovery operations, DCTs help process and densify kimberlite slurries or alluvial tailings, reducing the volume of waste material requiring disposal.
