A Deposit Evaluation Study is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary technical report that formally documents the results of a deposit evaluation process for a specific mineral project. It is a high-level document that integrates the findings of geology, geotechnical engineering, metallurgy, mining engineering, environmental science, and economics into a coherent assessment of a mineral deposit's feasibility and value. Such studies are produced for bauxite, gold, iron ore, diamond, and other mining projects at various stages of development, and may be classified as scoping studies, prefeasibility studies, or definitive (bankable) feasibility studies depending on the depth of the assessment and the confidence level of the underlying data. A Deposit Evaluation Study typically follows an internationally recognized structure and is prepared by an interdisciplinary team of competent persons (qualified persons in North American parlance) in accordance with professional and regulatory standards such as JORC, NI 43-101, or SAMREC. The study covers mineral resource and reserve estimation, mine design and production scheduling, process plant design and capital cost estimation, infrastructure requirements, operating cost estimation, environmental and social impact assessment, risk analysis, and financial modeling. For bauxite projects, the study addresses refinery integration and shipping logistics. For gold projects, it details process plant configuration — heap leach, CIL, CIP, or flotation — and bullion production schedules. For iron ore projects, it covers beneficiation and pelletizing options, product quality specifications, and port and rail logistics. For diamond projects, it addresses recovery plant design, security systems, and rough diamond marketing arrangements. The study forms the foundation for project financing, regulatory approvals, and final investment decisions.
