Deposit Exploration

Deposit exploration refers to the systematic program of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and drilling activities conducted to discover new mineral deposits or to expand and better define the extent and grade of known deposits. It is the foundational activity in the mining industry lifecycle and is undertaken for all commodity types, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamonds, across a wide range of geological settings and jurisdictions.  Mineral deposit exploration typically begins with a target generation phase, in which geological mapping, remote sensing, airborne geophysical surveys, and geochemical sampling programs are used to identify areas with geological characteristics favorable for the accumulation of the target mineral. Promising targets are then subjected to more detailed ground-based investigations, including soil and rock sampling, ground geophysical surveys, and trench sampling, to narrow the focus to specific areas warranting drill testing. Drilling — using techniques such as rotary air blast, reverse circulation, and diamond core drilling — is the definitive tool for confirming the presence, grade, and geometry of mineralization at depth. Assay results from drill samples are interpreted in the context of geological models to guide further drill programs until the deposit is sufficiently delineated to support a resource estimate. In bauxite exploration, airborne and ground-based drilling programs across tropical laterite terrains define the extent of aluminium-bearing horizons. In gold exploration, geochemical anomaly follow-up drilling tests structurally controlled mineralization. In iron ore exploration, systematic RC and diamond drilling programs define banded iron formation (BIF) deposits. In diamond exploration, sampling of indicator minerals such as pyrope garnets and chrome diopsides guides drilling of kimberlite targets.
