Diamond Drilling

Diamond drilling is a precision rotary drilling technique that uses a drill bit embedded with industrial diamonds to core through rock with minimal disturbance to the surrounding material. In mining exploration — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond projects — diamond drilling is the preferred method for obtaining continuous, high-quality core samples from depth. The cylindrical core recovered provides geologists with accurate information about rock type, mineralisation, structure, grade, and alteration patterns. The drill bit rotates at high speed and is cooled by water or drilling fluid, which also carries rock cuttings to the surface. Diamond drilling rigs can operate on surface or underground and are capable of drilling at any angle, including horizontal and decline orientations. In diamond mining specifically, diamond drilling must be conducted with particular care to preserve fragile ore zones and kimberlite textures. Core recovery rates are a key metric, as high recovery ensures representative sampling and reliable resource estimation. Diamond drilling is more expensive than reverse circulation drilling but provides superior geological data for resource definition and feasibility studies.
