Differential GPS (DGPS) is an enhanced form of the Global Positioning System (GPS) that improves positional accuracy by correcting errors inherent in standard GPS signals through the use of a network of fixed reference stations with precisely known coordinates. In mining operations — including open-pit bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines — DGPS provides centimetre-to-decimetre-level accuracy compared to the metre-level accuracy of standard GPS, making it indispensable for precise surveying, blast pattern design, drill hole positioning, grade control sampling, and machine guidance. DGPS works by comparing the known position of a fixed base station with its GPS-derived position and broadcasting correction signals to mobile receivers in real time. Applications in mining include automated dozer and grader control for accurate bench shaping, truck and shovel positioning for fleet management, topographic surveying for volume calculations, and alignment of infrastructure such as haul roads, pipelines, and drainage systems. Integration of DGPS with mine planning software enables accurate as-built mapping and real-time comparison of actual versus planned excavation shapes, contributing to improved resource recovery and reduced mining dilution.
