Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) refers to ore that is of sufficiently high grade and purity to be mined, crushed if necessary, and shipped directly to a customer or smelter without the need for significant beneficiation or processing at the mine site. The ore meets the minimum quality specifications of the end-user—such as iron content, silica levels, or alumina grade—straight from the mine face after basic size reduction and screening. In iron ore mining, DSO deposits are particularly valuable because they require minimal processing infrastructure, reducing capital expenditure and operating costs. Australia's Pilbara region and Brazil's Carajás system are globally recognized DSO iron ore operations. In bauxite mining, high-grade bauxite deposits with low reactive silica content may qualify as DSO, allowing the ore to be shipped directly to alumina refineries. The commercial viability of DSO operations depends heavily on ore grade, moisture content, physical properties, freight costs, and the specifications of the receiving facility. As high-grade DSO deposits become increasingly scarce globally, mining companies are increasingly investing in beneficiation technology to upgrade lower-grade ores to DSO-equivalent specifications.
