Drill Collar

A drill collar is the uppermost portion of a drilled borehole that is visible at the surface and serves as the reference point for all drilling activities. In mining exploration projects for bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamonds, the drill collar marks the exact location where a drill hole begins and is identified using coordinates, elevation, and orientation data. Surveyors accurately measure and record drill collar positions because they provide the foundation for geological modeling, resource estimation, and mine planning. Collar information typically includes northing, easting, elevation, hole depth, azimuth, and dip. During exploration campaigns, drill collars are often marked with stakes, concrete monuments, or metal tags to ensure future identification.
