Emission Reduction in mining refers to the deliberate implementation of measures, technologies, operational changes, and process improvements designed to decrease the quantity of pollutants and greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by mining and mineral processing activities. For bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, emission reduction is both a regulatory obligation and an increasingly important corporate sustainability commitment driven by international climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and national carbon legislation. Reducing emissions benefits mine operators by lowering regulatory compliance costs, improving community relationships, and aligning with investor expectations for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

Emission reduction strategies in mining span a wide range of interventions. In haul truck-dominated iron ore and bauxite operations, transitioning from diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, or battery-electric trucks offers significant reductions in CO2 and particulate emissions. In gold processing, replacing carbon-in-pulp circuits with resin-in-pulp technologies can reduce reagent use and associated emissions. Fugitive dust suppression through water carts, chemical dust suppressants, and vegetation of disturbed areas significantly reduces PM10 and PM2.5 at open-pit mines. In diamond processing, upgrading to energy-efficient comminution technologies reduces both energy consumption and related emissions. Additional measures include renewable energy integration, waste heat recovery, fleet electrification, process optimization, and carbon offset programs.
