Emission Reduction Program

An Emission Reduction Program is a formally structured, time-bound, and measurable initiative through which a mining organization — operating in sectors such as bauxite, gold, iron ore, or diamond mining — commits to achieving specific, quantifiable reductions in its pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions over a defined period. An effective emission reduction program is built on a robust baseline emission inventory, establishes clear reduction targets (expressed as absolute tonnage reductions or as emission intensity improvements per unit of production), identifies the specific reduction measures to be implemented, assigns organizational responsibility, allocates budget and resources, and defines key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting timelines.

Emission reduction programs may be driven by regulatory requirements — such as mandatory participation in a national emissions trading scheme or compliance with air quality permit conditions — or by voluntary corporate sustainability goals aligned with science-based targets (SBTs). In bauxite operations, a program might target a 30% reduction in SO2 emissions from alumina calcination kilns by retrofitting with scrubber technology over a five-year period. In gold mining, a program might focus on eliminating diesel use in underground haulage by transitioning to battery-electric vehicles. Iron ore emission reduction programs often target Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy procurement and process electrification. Progress against program targets must be tracked, reported publicly, and verified by independent third-party auditors to ensure credibility and accountability.
