An Emission Standard is a legally enforceable regulatory limit or guideline that specifies the maximum permissible concentration, mass rate, or total quantity of a specific pollutant or class of pollutants that a mining operation is permitted to discharge into the atmosphere from a defined emission source. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, emission standards are established by national and regional environmental protection agencies and are typically set out in environmental licenses, permits to operate, or under specific clean air legislation. They apply to a wide range of pollutants including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fluoride compounds, and various toxic metals.
Emission standards may be expressed as concentration-based limits (e.g., mg/Nm³ in stack gas), mass-based limits (e.g., tonnes per year), or technology-based standards that require the use of best available technology (BAT) or best practicable means (BPM) to minimize emissions. In gold mining, standards may specify limits on cyanide compound releases from heap leach facilities or SO2 from pressure oxidation plants. Iron ore sintering plants face strict SO2 and PM standards. Bauxite refineries must comply with fluoride and red dust emission limits. Non-compliance with emission standards can result in regulatory penalties, permit suspension, or mine closure. Standards are periodically reviewed and tightened as technology advances and environmental objectives evolve.
