Encapsulation, in the context of mining operations — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — refers to the process of isolating, containing, or sealing hazardous materials, waste products, or environmentally sensitive substances within a defined physical boundary to prevent their migration into surrounding environments. This may involve encasing tailings, acid-generating waste rock, or chemically reactive ores in impermeable liners, covers, or barriers. In bauxite mining, encapsulation is frequently applied to caustic red mud residues generated during alumina refining, ensuring that alkaline leachate does not contaminate soil or groundwater. In gold mining operations, cyanide-bearing tailings and arsenopyrite-rich waste rock may require encapsulation to prevent acid mine drainage (AMD) and heavy metal leaching. Iron ore operations use encapsulation techniques to manage dust and fine particulate waste, while diamond mining employs it to contain kimberlite slurry and chemically treated process water. Encapsulation is a key element of mine closure planning and long-term environmental liability management, ensuring regulatory compliance across all phases of the mine life cycle.
