Energy Audit

An Energy Audit is a systematic, structured evaluation of energy use across all operational areas of a mining site — encompassing bauxite, gold, iron ore, or diamond mining facilities — with the objective of identifying inefficiencies, waste, and opportunities for energy savings. The audit process involves the collection and analysis of energy consumption data from all major end-users, including crushing and grinding circuits, pumping systems, ventilation infrastructure, processing plants, hauling fleets, and accommodation facilities. Qualified energy auditors conduct on-site inspections, review utility billing records, and assess equipment performance against manufacturer specifications and industry benchmarks. In large-scale mining operations, energy audits are particularly critical given that electricity and diesel fuel constitute a significant proportion of total operating costs. The findings of an energy audit are typically compiled into an audit report that includes an inventory of energy-consuming equipment, a breakdown of consumption by category, identified energy saving measures, estimated costs and payback periods, and prioritized recommendations for implementation. Energy audits may be conducted internally or by accredited third-party consultants, and may be mandated by regulatory authorities or corporate sustainability frameworks.
