Energy Conservation in mining refers to the deliberate reduction of energy consumption through behavioral, operational, and procedural changes that eliminate unnecessary energy use without compromising production targets, safety standards, or product quality. Unlike energy efficiency — which focuses on achieving the same output with less energy through technological improvement — energy conservation often involves actions such as switching off equipment during idle periods, reducing fleet idling time, optimizing shift schedules to minimize peak demand charges, adjusting ventilation systems to reflect actual occupancy conditions, and implementing company-wide awareness programs to promote energy-conscious behavior. In bauxite and iron ore mining, where large volumes of material are moved using diesel-powered haul trucks, conservation measures can include optimized haul road design, speed management, and load optimization to reduce fuel burn per tonne-kilometre. In gold and diamond processing, conservation may involve scheduling high-energy processes such as SAG milling or flotation during off-peak electricity tariff periods. Energy conservation is a foundational element of responsible resource management, directly contributing to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, operational costs, and environmental footprint.
