Filtration System

A filtration system in mining is a fully integrated arrangement of process equipment, control systems, utilities, and operational protocols specifically designed to achieve the required solid-liquid separation performance for a mining or mineral processing operation. The term is commonly used to describe the engineering design deliverable that encompasses all aspects of filtration at a site level, from the point where slurry enters the filtration circuit to the point where dewatered solids and recovered liquids leave for their respective downstream destinations.

In bauxite mining operations, filtration systems are critical in the Bayer refinery circuit, where alumina trihydrate crystals must be washed and filtered to remove caustic liquor before calcination. The filtration system must achieve low soda levels in the filter cake while maximizing caustic recovery in the filtrate for return to the digestion circuit. In gold mining, filtration systems are used to dewater the leach residue after the carbon-in-pulp or heap leach gold extraction process, recovering pregnant or barren solution for reuse and producing a solid residue suitable for tailings disposal.

In iron ore processing, filtration systems applied to iron ore concentrate must reliably achieve moisture contents typically below 9% for pellet feed applications, as moisture directly affects pellet quality and fuel consumption in induration furnaces. Diamond processing filtration systems must handle the diverse range of kimberlite or alluvial host rock materials with varying clay contents and particle size distributions, often requiring pre-treatment with flocculants and coagulants.

Key design elements of a mining filtration system include equipment selection and sizing, filter cloth specification and management strategy, filtrate handling and recycle, cake conveyance and disposal, utility requirements for compressed air, washwater and power, and the automation and control philosophy. Vendor experience with similar ore types and scale-up from pilot plant testwork are essential inputs to reliable filtration system design.
