Efficient and reliable fine ore handling is essential to maintaining consistent plant throughput in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations.
The primary components of a fine ore handling system include the fine ore conveyors that transport crushed ore from the screening plant to the fine ore storage facility, the fine ore storage bins or stockpiles where buffer inventory is held, the reclaim feeders and conveyors that deliver ore from storage to the mill feed system, the dust suppression and containment systems that manage airborne particulates generated during ore transfer and storage, and the associated structural steelwork, chutes, and wear liners.
In iron ore processing plants handling high-throughput operations of tens of millions of tonnes per year, fine ore handling systems may incorporate large covered stockpile facilities equipped with stacker-reclaimer machines capable of blending different ore types or grades to achieve a consistent feed to the processing plant. This ore blending function is particularly important in controlling mill feed variability and optimizing concentrate quality.
Challenges in fine ore handling are particularly acute when dealing with high-moisture or high-clay ores that exhibit cohesive and sticky behavior, leading to problems of material hanging up in chutes and bins, belt carryback, and conveyor mistracking. Engineering solutions include the use of steep chute angles, low-friction liner materials, air cannon blockage clearing systems, belt cleaners, and covered conveyor systems. In regions subject to freezing temperatures, fine ore handling systems must also incorporate provisions to prevent ore freezing and consolidation in storage bins and on conveyor belts.
