Fire Suppression

Fire suppression in mining refers to the active systems and manual methods used to extinguish or control fires that have been detected within mine workings, processing plants, mobile equipment, or associated infrastructure, with the primary objectives of protecting human life, limiting asset damage, preventing environmental harm, and restoring safe operating conditions as quickly as possible. Fire suppression is a fundamental safety requirement across all mining sectors including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations.

Automatic fire suppression systems are installed at locations of high fire risk throughout a mine site. Fixed deluge and sprinkler water-based suppression systems protect conveyor belt transfer stations, crusher buildings, electrical switchrooms, concentrate storage facilities, and process buildings. These systems are activated automatically by detection of heat or smoke and deliver large volumes of water or foam solution to rapidly cool and extinguish a fire. Gaseous suppression systems using clean agents such as CO₂, FM200 (heptafluoropropane), or NOVEC 1230 are used in enclosed electrical rooms, control rooms, and server rooms where water damage to sensitive equipment must be avoided.

Mobile equipment fire suppression systems are installed on all major mining mobile assets including haul trucks, excavators, dozers, loaders, and drill rigs. These systems use pressurized dry chemical powder or liquid agent to suppress fires at the engine compartment, hydraulic system, and wheel stations — the most common fire locations on mining mobile equipment. Systems are activated either automatically by heat detectors or manually by the operator or responding personnel.

Portable fire extinguishers are strategically positioned throughout mine facilities and on all vehicles, providing the first line of response for incipient fires before they develop into larger events. The selection of extinguisher agent (water, foam, dry powder, CO₂, or wet chemical) is matched to the specific fire risks present at each location. Regular inspection, maintenance, and testing of all suppression systems and extinguishers is mandated to ensure readiness when needed.
