Fleet Maintenance in mining refers to the systematic set of activities, programs, and processes designed to preserve, repair, and restore mobile equipment to its designed operating condition, thereby ensuring reliability, safety, and operational continuity. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, fleet maintenance is a major operational function that directly influences equipment availability, maintenance costs, safety performance, and the overall production capacity of the mine.

Mining fleet maintenance encompasses several distinct categories: preventive maintenance (PM), which involves scheduled inspections, fluid changes, filter replacements, and component checks at predefined intervals based on hours of operation or calendar time; predictive maintenance (PdM), which uses condition monitoring technologies such as oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, and on-board diagnostics to detect early signs of wear or impending failure; corrective maintenance, which involves repairing equipment that has failed or is performing below standard; and major component rebuild programs, which replace high-wear components such as engines, transmissions, final drives, and hydraulic systems at planned intervals to avoid catastrophic failures.

Maintenance is carried out in dedicated workshops equipped with heavy lifting infrastructure, diagnostic tools, and specialized tooling for large mining equipment from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, and Hitachi. Component exchange programs, where worn components are swapped for pre-built assemblies to minimize equipment downtime, are widely used in large operations. Fleet maintenance costs — including labor, parts, consumables, and tires — typically represent 30–50% of total mining operating costs, making maintenance management one of the most significant levers for cost reduction and productivity improvement in the sector. Computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) such as SAP PM, IBM Maximo, and Infor EAM are used to plan, schedule, track, and analyze all maintenance activities.
