A fuel farm is a large-scale, engineered bulk fuel storage and distribution facility located within or adjacent to a mining operation, designed to receive, store, and distribute significant volumes of diesel fuel and other petroleum products to meet the operational requirements of mobile equipment, fixed plant, power generation facilities, and camp services. Fuel farms are essential infrastructure components of remote mining operations where reliable fuel supply is critical to continuous production in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining environments.
A fuel farm typically consists of multiple large above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) or underground storage tanks (USTs) — ranging in individual capacity from a few hundred kiloliters to several thousand kiloliters — arranged within a fully bunded (secondary containment) compound engineered to contain 110% of the volume of the largest tank in the event of catastrophic failure. The compound lining must be impermeable (typically a geomembrane or reinforced concrete base) to prevent fuel from contaminating soil and groundwater.
Fuel delivery to the fuel farm is by road tanker (road train), pipeline from a nearby port or railhead, river barge, or coastal tanker depending on the location and accessibility of the mine. Fuel is received through dedicated unloading stations fitted with metered connections, and stored in tanks typically equipped with floating roof designs (for large diesel tanks), breather valves, flame arresters, overfill protection devices (high-level shutoffs and alarms), and automatic tank gauging (ATG) systems for real-time inventory management.
Distribution from the fuel farm to the mine site fuel bays, bulk refueling trucks (tankers), and fixed plant connections is via a network of above-ground or buried steel or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines fitted with isolation valves, pressure gauges, and flow meters. Fire suppression systems (foam-based fixed deluge systems or monitor nozzles) are mandatory, along with emergency earthing and bonding provisions, lightning protection, and signage. Fuel farm design, construction, and operation must comply with applicable petroleum and explosives storage legislation, AS 1940 (Australia), API 650/653 (USA), or equivalent national standards.
