Gas emissions are a critical consideration in occupational safety, environmental management, and regulatory compliance across all mining sectors, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining.
Natural geological gas emissions in underground mining environments include methane (CH4) released from coal seams or carbonaceous shales, carbon dioxide (CO2) accumulating in low-lying areas, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emanating from sulfide-rich orebodies, and radon gas from uranium-bearing host rocks. These naturally occurring gases pose serious health and safety risks, including asphyxiation, poisoning, and explosion hazards, and must be managed through engineered ventilation systems, continuous monitoring programs, and emergency response protocols.
In surface mining operations, gas emissions arise from multiple sources including diesel-powered equipment exhaust (generating CO, NOx, particulate matter, and hydrocarbons), blasting operations (producing CO, NO2, and ammonia from explosives residues), and spontaneous combustion of sulfide-bearing waste rock or ore stockpiles (releasing SO2 and CO).
In gold mining, the cyanidation process can generate hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas under acidic conditions, posing acute toxicity risks to plant workers. Similarly, the smelting and refining of gold doré produces sulfur dioxide (SO2) and potentially mercury vapour emissions, requiring fume capture and treatment systems.
In bauxite refineries, emissions of bauxite dust, caustic soda aerosols, and calcination kiln gases (CO2, SO2) must be carefully controlled. Iron ore sintering and pelletizing operations are significant sources of SO2, NOx, and dioxin/furan emissions, necessitating comprehensive off-gas treatment systems including electrostatic precipitators and wet scrubbers.
Gas emission monitoring, reporting, and reduction programs are mandated under environmental legislation in most mining jurisdictions. International standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) frameworks require systematic quantification and public disclosure of Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from mining operations.
