Greenfield Exploration

Greenfield Exploration refers to mineral exploration activities conducted in areas with little or no prior mining history, existing infrastructure, or previously documented mineral resources. It represents the earliest and highest-risk stage of the mining development cycle, where exploration teams search for entirely new mineral deposits in previously unexplored or underexplored terrains. The term contrasts with brownfield exploration, which takes place adjacent to or within existing mine operations.

Greenfield exploration programs typically involve regional reconnaissance surveys including airborne geophysics (magnetic, gravity, electromagnetic, and radiometric surveys), geochemical soil and stream sediment sampling, geological mapping, and remote sensing analysis of satellite imagery. Promising targets identified from these regional programs are then followed up with more detailed geophysical surveys, trenching, and ultimately drilling to test subsurface geology.

In bauxite exploration, greenfield programs target lateritic plateaux in tropical regions, particularly in West Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. In gold exploration, greenfield work may focus on identifying new greenstone belts or porphyry systems in underexplored regions. Diamond greenfield exploration often involves systematic searches for kimberlite indicator minerals — such as pyrope garnets, chrome diopsides, and ilmenites — in stream sediments across cratons in Africa, Canada, Russia, and Australia.

Greenfield exploration is inherently risky, with a very low probability of any individual target leading to a commercially viable mine, making it a capital-intensive and long-duration activity.
