Hydrocyclone

A hydrocyclone is a static (no moving parts) classification device widely used in mineral processing plants to separate particles in a slurry based on differences in size, density, and centrifugal force. It operates by introducing slurry tangentially into a cylindrical-conical vessel, creating a strong rotational vortex. This motion generates centrifugal forces that push heavier and coarser particles toward the wall, causing them to spiral downward and exit through the underflow, while finer and lighter particles remain in the central vortex and are discharged through the overflow. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond processing, hydrocyclones are essential for size classification before and after grinding circuits, ensuring optimal liberation of valuable minerals. They are also used for desliming and dewatering operations. Their efficiency depends on feed pressure, particle size distribution, cyclone geometry, and slurry density. Hydrocyclones are valued in mining because they are energy-efficient, compact, and highly effective in continuous operations, especially in large-scale beneficiation plants.
