Industrial Automation in mining refers to the application of control systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensor networks, and digital technologies to perform mining tasks and processes with minimal or no direct human intervention, thereby enhancing safety, productivity, efficiency, and consistency of operations across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines. Automation in mining encompasses a spectrum of technologies, from semi-automated equipment with operator assistance to fully autonomous systems. Examples include autonomous haulage systems (AHS) deployed extensively in iron ore mining in Australia's Pilbara region by Rio Tinto, BHP, and Fortescue Metals Group, where fleets of autonomous trucks operate around the clock guided by GPS, LiDAR, and radar. In bauxite mining, automated drill rigs, autonomous dozers, and automated conveyor systems have been implemented. In gold mining, automated laboratory systems including automated sample preparation and assaying, robotic arm systems, and tele-remote underground loaders enhance safety and throughput. In diamond mining, automated X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sorters and X-ray transmission (XRT) systems have revolutionised diamond recovery. Industrial automation is supported by integrated operations centres, predictive maintenance systems using IoT sensors, and advanced process control (APC) platforms, enabling mining companies to operate more safely and competitively in challenging global commodity markets.
