Industrial Emissions in the mining sector encompass all discharges of gases, particulates, aerosols, and other substances released into the atmosphere, water bodies, and soil as a direct or indirect consequence of mining and mineral processing activities across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations. Air emissions from mining include particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) generated by blasting, drilling, road haulage, crushing, screening, and materials handling; nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) from diesel combustion and smelting; carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories; and mercury vapour from gold amalgamation operations. In bauxite refining (alumina production), caustic soda dust and bauxite dust are significant emission concerns. In gold mining, cyanide vapour, mercury, and arsenic compounds require strict control measures. Iron ore operations generate significant dust, CO2 from diesel machinery, and NOx from blasting. Diamond mining emissions are primarily related to diesel combustion, dust, and marine tailings discharge in offshore operations. Industrial emissions are regulated under national environmental protection legislation, emission standards, and increasingly under international carbon reduction commitments such as the Paris Agreement. Mining companies manage emissions through dust suppression, wet scrubbers, baghouse filters, electrostatic precipitators, fleet electrification, and GHG offset programmes.
