Industrial Water Supply

Industrial water supply refers to the infrastructure, systems, and arrangements established to reliably deliver sufficient volumes of water of appropriate quality to meet all operational requirements of a mine and mineral processing facility. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, ensuring a secure and sustainable industrial water supply is a fundamental requirement of project feasibility and ongoing operations. A reliable water supply is required for ore processing, dust suppression, slurry transport, cooling systems, employee amenities, and emergency fire suppression.  The design of an industrial water supply system must account for peak demand scenarios, seasonal variability, water loss through evaporation and seepage, and regulatory constraints on extraction volumes. In regions with seasonal rainfall patterns, water supply infrastructure typically includes large raw water storage dams or reservoirs to capture wet-season flows and provide a strategic buffer through the dry season. Pumping stations, pipelines, water treatment plants, and distribution networks form the physical backbone of mine water supply systems. Many modern mining operations are moving toward greater self-sufficiency by maximizing the recirculation of process and mine water, reducing dependence on fresh external sources. Regulatory water licenses or entitlements govern the volumes that can legally be extracted from surface or groundwater sources, and these allocations are increasingly contested where mining and agriculture or local communities compete for limited water resources. Water supply security is therefore not only a technical and engineering matter but also a social, legal, and strategic business concern for mine operators across all commodity sectors.
