Jaw Crusher

A jaw crusher is a heavy-duty primary crushing machine used extensively across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations to reduce large run-of-mine (ROM) ore and rock into smaller, more manageable fragments for downstream processing. The machine operates through a compressive force mechanism, consisting of two jaw plates — one fixed and one movable — that work in a reciprocating motion driven by an eccentric shaft and flywheel assembly. As the movable jaw swings toward the fixed jaw, ore fed into the gape (the upper opening) is progressively crushed downward and discharged through the bottom opening, known as the closed-side setting (CSS), which controls the product size.

In bauxite mining, jaw crushers are commonly deployed at primary crushing stations near the pit to break large bauxite nodules before transport to the washing plant. In gold and iron ore operations, they initiate the comminution circuit, enabling efficient grinding in subsequent ball or SAG mills. In diamond mining (kimberlite and alluvial), jaw crushers must be operated carefully at controlled settings to avoid breaking diamonds embedded in the host rock. Key performance parameters include throughput capacity (tonnes per hour), reduction ratio (feed size to product size), and power draw. Regular maintenance of jaw plates, toggle assemblies, and bearings is critical to prevent unplanned downtime in high-volume mining circuits.
