A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), also referred to as a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) in many jurisdictions, is a systematic, structured process used in the mining industry to proactively identify, evaluate, and control potential hazards associated with specific work tasks before those tasks are performed. The JHA methodology involves breaking a job down into its sequential steps, identifying the hazards inherent in each step, and then determining appropriate control measures to eliminate or mitigate those hazards to an acceptable risk level.
In mining environments — whether bauxite, gold, iron ore, or diamond — the JHA is a fundamental tool of a robust safety management system (SMS). Work activities subject to JHAs include equipment maintenance, blasting operations, confined space entry, working at heights, chemical handling, and operation of heavy mobile equipment. A typical JHA document records the job steps in the left column, associated hazards in the middle column, and recommended controls in the right column, following the hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Completed JHAs are reviewed and signed off by supervisors and workers before commencement of the task. They serve as both a planning tool and a training resource, fostering a proactive safety culture. Regulatory frameworks in jurisdictions such as Australia, South Africa, and Canada require documented hazard identification processes, making JHAs a legal as well as operational necessity.
