Job Safety Analysis

A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a workplace safety procedure widely employed across the mining sector — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — to systematically examine each task or job step for potential safety hazards and to define control measures that protect workers from injury, illness, or fatality. The JSA is closely related to the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and the two terms are often used interchangeably, though some organizations distinguish between them based on the scope of hazard categories considered (safety vs. health and environmental risks).

The JSA process typically begins with selecting a specific job or task for analysis, breaking it into discrete sequential steps, identifying the hazards or potential accidents associated with each step, and recommending safe procedures or protective equipment to mitigate risk. In surface and underground mining operations, JSAs are applied to tasks such as drill rig setup, conveyor maintenance, truck tipping operations, use of explosives, and work near open excavations or highwalls. Workers actively participate in developing JSAs, ensuring that those with the most hands-on knowledge of a task contribute to hazard identification. This participatory approach increases worker engagement and safety ownership. JSAs are living documents — updated when procedures change, after near-miss incidents, or following injury investigations. Mining companies that rigorously apply JSAs demonstrate measurably lower incident rates and comply with national occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.
