Kaolinite

Kaolinite is a phyllosilicate clay mineral with the chemical formula Al2Si2O5(OH)4, belonging to the kaolin group of minerals. It is formed primarily through the chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration of aluminium-bearing silicate minerals such as feldspars and micas, and is a ubiquitous constituent of tropical lateritic weathering profiles that give rise to bauxite deposits. In the context of bauxite mining, kaolinite is of particular significance because it represents an undesirable aluminium silicate phase that dilutes the alumina (Al2O3) content of bauxite ore while contributing reactive silica that consumes sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) in the Bayer process refinery, significantly increasing processing costs.

Geologically, kaolinite occurs in the lower portions of lateritic bauxite profiles, particularly in the mottled clay and saprolite zones, where incomplete weathering has transformed primary silicates into clay minerals rather than gibbsite, boehmite, or diaspore (the preferred aluminium hydroxide phases). The silica module — defined as the ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 — is a key quality parameter in bauxite assessment, and high kaolinite content results in an unfavourable (low) silica module, potentially rendering the bauxite uneconomic without beneficiation. In diamond and gold mining contexts, kaolinite is also encountered as a weathering product within regolith profiles, where it can complicate geochemical sampling interpretation and affect the geotechnical properties of pit walls and tailings storage facilities.
