Mechanical Availability

Mechanical Availability refers to the percentage of time that mining equipment is physically capable of performing its intended function, regardless of whether it is actually in use. It is a key performance indicator in mining operations across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines, particularly for heavy mobile equipment such as haul trucks, excavators, loaders, and drills. Mechanical Availability is calculated by comparing the total scheduled operating time with the time the equipment is not under repair or maintenance.

High mechanical availability indicates that equipment is reliable, well-maintained, and less prone to breakdowns, while low availability suggests frequent mechanical failures, inadequate maintenance strategies, or aging assets. It is distinct from utilization, which measures how much available time is actually used for productive work.

In mining operations, mechanical availability is influenced by maintenance planning, spare parts availability, operator behavior, environmental conditions, and equipment design. For instance, abrasive bauxite or iron ore conditions can accelerate wear on equipment components, reducing availability. Mining companies use preventive and predictive maintenance systems to improve availability and minimize unplanned downtime. High mechanical availability is essential for maintaining production targets, reducing cost per ton, and ensuring operational continuity. It is also a critical input in production forecasting and fleet management decisions.
