Mine Utilization

Mine utilization is a key performance indicator (KPI) that measures the productive efficiency of mining equipment and operational time as a proportion of total available time. It is typically expressed as a percentage and calculated by dividing the actual productive hours of a piece of equipment or a mining section by the total scheduled hours available. Mine utilization encompasses both mechanical availability (the proportion of time equipment is mechanically functional) and operational availability (the proportion of time it is actively performing productive work). In bauxite and iron ore open-cut mines, maximizing the utilization of haul trucks, excavators, and drill rigs is critical to achieving production targets and minimizing unit operating costs. In underground gold and diamond mines, utilization metrics are tracked for development drills, load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, and hoisting systems. Factors that negatively impact utilization include unplanned breakdowns, shift changes, blast clearance delays, adverse weather, and organizational inefficiencies. Mine utilization data is analyzed through fleet management systems and is used to guide maintenance scheduling, workforce rostering, and production planning. Best-in-class operations across all mine types typically target utilization rates above 80% for critical equipment.
