Mining Equipment

Mining equipment refers to the broad range of machinery, vehicles, and fixed plant used throughout the mining process, from initial drilling and blasting through to material handling, processing, and product dispatch. Common categories of mobile equipment include drill rigs for blast hole or exploration drilling, hydraulic excavators and rope shovels for loading, haul trucks for transporting ore and waste, bulldozers and graders for site preparation and road maintenance, and draglines, which are particularly significant in large-scale iron ore strip mining operations. Fixed processing equipment varies considerably by commodity: gold operations typically employ crushing and grinding circuits followed by cyanide leaching and carbon-in-leach or carbon-in-pulp recovery systems; iron ore operations use crushing, screening, and beneficiation equipment such as dense media separators or magnetic separators; bauxite operations rely on specialized digesters, clarifiers, and precipitators associated with the Bayer alumina refining process; and diamond operations require dense media separation plants combined with X-ray transmission or other optical sorting technology specifically designed to identify and recover individual diamond stones without damage. Selection of appropriate mining equipment has a major bearing on capital cost, operating efficiency, and achievable production rates.
