Misfire

A misfire is a blasting incident in which one or more explosive charges within a planned blast fail to detonate as intended, either partially or completely, leaving live, undetonated explosive material within the rock mass. Misfires represent one of the most serious safety hazards in mining because the remaining explosive can detonate unexpectedly during subsequent drilling, loading, or excavation activities, posing a severe risk of injury or death to personnel and damage to equipment. Causes of misfires include faulty detonators, damaged or cut detonating cord, water ingress into electric blasting circuits, incorrect timing delays, or human error during charging and connection of the blast. Mining regulations and internal safety procedures mandate strict protocols for managing misfires, including establishing exclusion zones around the affected area, mandatory waiting periods before re-entry, and specific procedures for either re-initiating the charge or safely removing and disposing of it under the supervision of a qualified shotfirer or blasting engineer. All misfire events must typically be logged and reported to regulatory authorities. Because gold, diamond, and iron ore mines frequently rely on drill-and-blast methods to fragment hard rock, robust misfire management procedures form a core part of mine safety management systems.
