Mucking is the mining process of loading and removing blasted or excavated rock and ore, commonly referred to as muck, from a mine face, tunnel, or stope so that the area can be cleared for the next phase of work. The term originated in underground mining and remains most closely associated with underground operations, including many gold mines and certain diamond mines that access kimberlite pipes through underground methods. Mucking is typically performed using specialized equipment such as load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles, scoop trams, or, in smaller or older operations, hand mucking with shovels and rail-mounted mucking machines. The efficiency of mucking operations directly affects overall mine productivity, since delays in clearing blasted material can stall subsequent drilling, support installation, and ore haulage cycles. Safety considerations are paramount during mucking, as the freshly blasted muck pile may contain unstable rock fragments, residual blasting agents, or hazardous gas accumulations that must be managed before personnel and equipment enter the area. Modern mucking operations increasingly incorporate automated or remotely operated LHD equipment to reduce worker exposure to hazardous ground conditions while maintaining high material movement rates in active underground workings.
