Noise Exposure

Noise exposure refers to the amount and duration of sound energy that workers or surrounding populations are subjected to over a given period, typically measured in decibels (dB) and time-weighted averages (TWA). In mining operations such as iron ore extraction, gold processing, and diamond recovery, noise exposure is a significant occupational health concern due to the constant use of heavy machinery, blasting activities, crushers, and ventilation systems.

Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can lead to irreversible hearing loss, tinnitus, stress, reduced concentration, and increased risk of workplace accidents. Regulatory bodies in most jurisdictions set permissible exposure limits (PEL), often around 85 dB over an 8-hour shift. Mining companies are required to monitor, assess, and manage noise exposure as part of their occupational health and safety (OHS) programs.

Noise exposure is managed through engineering controls (equipment maintenance, silencers), administrative controls (shift rotation, limiting time in high-noise areas), and personal protective equipment (hearing protection devices such as earplugs and earmuffs). In modern mining, real-time monitoring systems and wearable dosimeters are increasingly used to track individual exposure levels.

Effective management of noise exposure is essential not only for regulatory compliance but also for maintaining workforce productivity, reducing compensation claims, and ensuring long-term health sustainability in mining environments.
