In-Pit Conveyor

An In-Pit Conveyor is a belt conveyor system installed within the confines of an open-pit mine to transport ore, waste rock, or a combination of both from the mining face or in-pit crushing station to a designated surface stockpile, processing plant, or waste dump, thereby replacing or supplementing the conventional truck haulage fleet. These conveyors are engineered to handle steep gradients, often using high-angle conveyor technology or series of horizontal and inclined sections connected by transfer points. In bauxite mining, in-pit conveyors reduce truck fleet size and fuel consumption across large, shallow pits. In gold mining operations, they carry crushed ore from primary crushers located within the pit to surface heap leach pads. In iron ore mines, high-capacity in-pit conveyors — capable of handling thousands of tonnes per hour — transport iron ore from the pit bottom to surface processing facilities. In diamond mining, they transport kimberlite ore to primary crushers. In-pit conveyors deliver significant operational cost savings through reduced diesel consumption, lower tyre wear, fewer truck-related accidents, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, making them a key component of modern, sustainable mine design.
