Quartz

Quartz is one of the most abundant and widely distributed minerals in the Earth's crust, composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), and plays a significant and variable role across different mining commodities including gold, iron ore, bauxite, and diamond mining. In gold mining, quartz is the most important and common gangue mineral associated with hydrothermal gold deposits, where gold occurs as fine particles or native gold within quartz veins. These quartz-gold vein systems are a primary target in hard rock gold exploration and mining, and the characteristic white quartz veining in outcrops or drill core is a key indicator used by geologists to identify prospective areas. In iron ore mining, quartz is an undesirable impurity — primarily in the form of chert or quartzite bands interbedded with iron formations — that dilutes the iron grade and must be minimized through selective mining and beneficiation processes such as dense media separation and magnetic separation. In bauxite mining, the presence of quartz in the ore is problematic because it increases the reactive silica content, which negatively affects the efficiency of the Bayer process used to refine bauxite into alumina, increasing soda and lime consumption. In diamond mining, quartzite and quartz-rich country rocks can be encountered in proximity to kimberlite pipes and alluvial deposits, requiring careful geological discrimination during exploration. Understanding the mineralogical association of quartz with target minerals is essential for designing appropriate processing flowsheets and achieving optimal product quality.
