In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, where mobile equipment fleets can number in the hundreds and operate continuously in harsh conditions, rigorous vehicle inspection programs are a critical component of the safety management system and equipment maintenance strategy. Pre-operational or pre-shift inspections are typically conducted by the equipment operator before commencing each shift, using a standardized checklist that covers critical safety systems such as brakes, steering, lights, horns, mirrors, reverse alarms, fire suppression systems, seatbelts, and engine oil and fluid levels. Defects identified during pre-operational inspections are classified by severity, with critical safety defects requiring immediate removal of the vehicle from service pending repair, and non-critical defects being recorded for planned maintenance. In addition to operator-led pre-shift inspections, mining operations typically implement scheduled preventive maintenance inspections by qualified mechanics at defined intervals based on operating hours or calendar periods. In open-pit iron ore and bauxite mines, where enormous ultra-class haul trucks may carry loads exceeding 300 tonnes, the consequences of equipment failure can be catastrophic, making thorough and consistent vehicle inspections particularly important.
