Ventilation Fan

A ventilation fan in mining is a mechanical device that moves large volumes of air through underground workings to supply fresh air to workers and equipment, dilute and remove harmful gases and fumes generated by blasting, diesel combustion, and natural rock emissions, and maintain safe temperature and humidity conditions in the working environment. In underground gold and diamond mining — which represent the primary underground mining applications among the four commodity groups — ventilation fans are one of the most critical components of the mine infrastructure, and ventilation is often the single largest operating cost in deep mines. Ventilation fans are classified as either main fans, which drive the primary airflow through the entire mine ventilation circuit, or auxiliary fans, which provide local ventilation to development headings, stopes, and other areas not serviced by the main circuit. Main ventilation fans are typically installed on surface at the top of exhaust shafts or downcast shafts and may be of the axial flow or centrifugal type, with capacities ranging from tens of thousands to millions of cubic meters of air per hour in large deep-level gold mines. Auxiliary fans are smaller units installed underground to extend ventilation to working areas via flexible ducting. In deep gold mines in South Africa and other regions, where virgin rock temperatures can exceed 50°C, ventilation must be supplemented by refrigeration systems and bulk air coolers to achieve acceptable working temperatures. Fan performance — including flow rate, pressure, and efficiency — must be regularly monitored and maintained through blade inspection, bearing lubrication, and impeller cleaning, and fans must be equipped with safety guards and vibration monitoring systems.
