Vibration Analysis

Vibration analysis in mining refers to the systematic measurement, monitoring, and interpretation of vibration signatures from rotating and reciprocating equipment — including crushers, mills, pumps, fans, conveyors, and screen drives — to detect mechanical faults, imbalances, misalignments, and bearing defects at an early stage before they develop into catastrophic failures. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, vibration analysis is a cornerstone of predictive maintenance programs and condition monitoring strategies, enabling maintenance teams to transition from time-based to condition-based maintenance approaches that reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs. Vibration data is collected using accelerometers, velocity transducers, or displacement sensors mounted on equipment bearings, housings, or structural components, either as portable instruments used during periodic route-based measurements or as permanently installed online monitoring systems that provide continuous real-time data. The vibration signals are analyzed using techniques such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to decompose the vibration into its frequency components, enabling the identification of specific fault frequencies associated with imbalance, misalignment, looseness, bearing defects, gear mesh problems, and structural resonance. In large iron ore mine processing plants, where massive autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent multi-hundred-million-dollar capital investments, continuous online vibration monitoring systems provide early warning of liner wear, charge level changes, and gearbox faults. In gold processing plants, vibration analysis is applied to high-speed centrifugal pumps, vertical spindle crushers, and flotation impeller drives. In diamond processing facilities, vibration monitoring of dense media separators and X-ray sorters helps maintain the precision and reliability of the recovery circuit. Vibration analysis findings are trended over time, compared against baseline and alarm thresholds, and translated into work orders for maintenance intervention at the appropriate time.
